Big Thunder Mountain to CLOSE for Extensive Refurbishment.

Writer: Jacob KenyonJacob Kenyon

Big Thunder Mountain is expected to close on 6th January 2025 at Walt Disney World for a lengthy refurbishment. The ride is expected to be closed for a duration of 12 months with the entirety of the lake around it set to be fully drained.

A NOC or Notice of Commencement is a legal document which officially states the beginning of a project. This is filed by the property owner with a government agency and serves several important functions including identifying key participants in the project.

The contractor carrying out the work on Big Thunder Mountain is Coastsl Construction and according to the construction document, “general construction” expires on March 13th 2026. This means we could see Big Thunder Mountain closed for at least 12 months, if not longer.

That is one hefty refurbishment.

Cranes first arrived behind Big Thunder Mountain in mid-December with these being rumoured for use to replace parts of the rollercoasters track. It will be interesting to see if the rollercoaster receives a total re-track or just specific sections.

Big Thunder Mountain at Disneyland Paris is also about to undergo a refurbishment this year. For now, we will all have to sit tight and await “the wildest ride in the wilderness” to reopen.
